New Dems Blaze a Trail for Democratic Victory in 2026

Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill’s victories show that the path to Democratic victories runs through the New Dems

Today, New Democrat Coalition Chair Brad Schneider (IL-10) and NewDem Action Fund Chair Greg Stanton (AZ-04) issued a statement in response to the results of election night, showing New Dems Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill secured overwhelming gubernatorial victories in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively.

“Last night’s results in Virginia and New Jersey show that the path to democratic victories relies on the 'middle majority' supporting candidates with the vision and the strength to put the nation back on track. Similarly, the path to the majority in the House next year runs through the New Dems – just as it did in 2018 when our candidates helped flip 40 seats. Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill were part of the class of 2018 and showed again tonight the strength of our political brand on the country’s biggest stages. In 2026, we will blaze a trail to deliver a Democratic House majority.

“This moment calls for strength. As Trump and Congressional Republicans wreak havoc across the nation – stalling our economy, punishing Americans with higher prices, upending the rule of law, and stuffing the pockets of their billionaire friends – we know the New Dem approach can earn the trust, confidence, and votes of the American people in the midterm elections and beyond.

“Governors-elect Spanberger and Sherrill delivered Democratic victories by focusing on the kitchen table issues that matter most to voters. They showed how they would grow the economy and lower the cost of living, ensure the health and safety of working families in their communities, and defend our nation from those who seek to harm us – all while demonstrating they will govern with a steady hand and fight back against the Administration's chaos, corruption, and cruelty.

“Mikie and Abigail’s victories are the blueprint for the New Dems and our candidates. Together, we will give a voice to the middle majority, people who are tired of being squeezed by the extremes on either side. It’s the path we must follow to turn the tide in the midterms, regain the majority, and hold this Administration accountable.

“Let’s get to work.”
