Today, New Democrat Coalition Action Fund Chair Greg Stanton (AZ-04) and New Democrat Coalition Chair Brad Schneider (IL-10) issued the following statement after the California state legislature voted to approve a ballot initiative to allow voters to directly participate in the redistricting process, in response to Texas Republicans’ effort to rig the election in their favor and choose their voters. Californians will vote on whether to adopt the new map in a special election this November.
“Democrats will not stand idly by as President Trump and House Republicans try to rig the midterm elections and rip power away from the American people. In the face of this dangerous corruption, New Dems stand with the California Democrats who are fighting fire with fire, countering the effects of Texas Republicans’ sham redistricting while empowering voters by putting California’s redrawn map on the ballot.
“With Republicans recklessly launching a redistricting arms race across the country, it’s never been more clear that the path to the Democratic House majority runs through the districts of New Dem Members and candidates representing the toughest races every cycle.
“No matter what the final maps look like, New Dems will compete anywhere and everywhere by doing what we do best: winning over voters with commonsense solutions to ensure a Democratic victory.”
