ICYMI: Extreme GOP Candidate John Gibbs (MI-03) said “The United States has suffered as a result of women's suffrage"

The Stakes Have Never Been Higher & The Choice Has Never Been Clearer. We Must Send NewDem-Endorsed Candidate Hillary Scholten to Congress to Defend Women’s Freedoms.

ICYMI
- CNN:  GOP congressional candidate said US suffered from women's suffrage and praised organization trying to repeal 19th Amendment

Recent reporting from CNN has shown that the Republican candidate for Michigan’s Third Congressional District has a long track record of anti-women rhetoric, including asserting that “the United States has suffered as a result of women’s suffrage.” He also made clear his views that women did not have the “characteristics necessary to govern” and even argued against having women in the workforce.

This November, the stakes have never been higher and the choice has never been clearer. We cannot allow anti-women, extremist, Trump-backed candidates like John Gibbs to come to Congress. He doesn’t represent the values of Michigan’s Third District, and he doesn’t represent the views of the American people. NewDem-endorsed candidate Hillary Scholten does. She is a mainstream, commonsense candidate who will defend women’s freedoms and fight for equality for all.

NewDem Leaders on John Gibbs’ Anti-woman Statements:

“As chair of the New Democrat Coalition, a congressional Pro-Choice Caucus leader, a former businesswoman, and a former Washington state government leader, I’ve seen first hand how empowering women in every aspect of life strengthens American families, our country and economy,” said NDC Chair Rep. Suzan DelBene (WA-01). “John Gibbs’ comments are reprehensible. Thankfully, Michigan voters have an incredible advocate in Hillary Scholten, who will work tirelessly to defend women’s essential rights and freedoms. The choice is clear this November."

"New Dems are a prime example that women play a critical role in our government and governance, bringing innovative ideas, perspectives, and solutions to the table for our country," said Rep. Annie Kuster (NH-02). "These comments are beyond indefensible, they are un-American and have no role in our United States Congress. Voters in Michigan's Third District have a strong leader and problem-solver in Hillary Scholten and they will overwhelmingly elect her this November."

"John Gibbs wants to send women back to the dark ages and strip us of our hard earned rights,” said Rep. Haley Stevens. “This cannot stand. This kind of extremist ideology is a distraction from the issues that matter most to American families. West Michigan women deserve a leader in Congress who will work to expand their rights and make our country more equitable and prosperous for all Americans, regardless of their gender."

“I am truly disturbed by the rising trend of extreme and dangerous GOP candidates across the country who want to strip women of their rights and take us back a whole century,” said Rep. Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11). “This is not the America we want to live in or believe in. John Gibbs’ comments and his clear disdain for women make it clear he is not fit to represent anyone, ever. The stakes for our country have never been higher these midterms.”
